This document covers many of the new features of Drive7 Version 3.0. We recommend you read all the information before using the software.
Drive7 will work on any Macintosh with a supported drive running System 6.0.8 or System 7.0, 7.01, 7.1 or System 7 Pro. The software is compatible with the Macintosh PowerPC computers shipped to date.
• NOT A BOOT DISK
Contrary to the "What's Included" portion of the documentation, we can no longer provide a start-up disk. Since its introduction, we have been able to ship Drive7 on a disk you can from which you can startup your Mac. With the release of the newer Macintoshes, this is no longer possible because the Drive7 and Mount Cache applications have grown significantly to accommodate the new feature set required for the new Macs. Sorry.
You can still build your own boot disk. Just follow the instructions in the manual and that follow here.
• WHAT’S NEW IN VERSION 3.0?
SUPPORT FOR SCSI MANAGER 4.3
Drive7 v3.0 fully supports Apple’s SCSI Manager v4.3 which include SCSI-2 implementation. SCSI Manager 4.3 is built into the ROM chips of the Macintosh Quadra 660AV, 840AV, all Power Macs and later machines and adds new features to the SCSI bus and faster data transfer. Drive7 is fully compliant of the new SCSI Manager and it's new features. (Owners of non-SCSI Manager 4.3 Macs have full support for their machines too.)
REDESIGNED USER INTERFACE
Drive7 has been redesigned and now features a menu bar and a movable window. We've kept our original focus on ease of use and improved access to power-user options.
Most popular functions such Update, Format, Partition and Help can still be accessed directly in the Drive7 window without ever using a menu command.
MOUNT CACHE CONTROL PANEL DEVICE (CDEV)
The new Mount Cache CDEV is really three programs in one. The first is a System Extension that supports removable media such as SyQuest, Iomega Bernoulli, and Magneto-Optical drives. The second part of the program is the Control Panel window which allows you to set partition attributes such as locking, password protection without the need to re-launch the Drive7 application. Lastly, Mount Cache's new caching feature radically improves the access time of hard and removable drives and even display the improvements!
UPDATING TO VERSION 3.0
Drives formatted with earlier versions of Drive7 may be updated without re-formatting or erasing data. Using the "Update" feature in the Drive7 application replaces the old Drive7 code with one button click. NOTE: You must update a hard drive with version 3.0 from previous Drive7 versions to use the new caching feature built into the Mount Cache control panel. However, removable cartridges (SyQuest, Bernoulli, etc.) do not need to be updated to use the caching feature. We recommend you back up your drive before performing an update for safety's sake.
The Mount Cache CDEV completely replaces our Drive7rem control panel. If you have Drive7rem installed in your Control Panels folder, drag it to the trash and install Mount Cache from the Drive7 floppy disk.
SUPERMAC DATAFRAME HARD DRIVES
With the newer-Macintosh SCSI Manager requirements, older SuperMac DataFrame drives may not be supported by Drive7 v3.0. These include the DataFrame 20, 30, 40 and 60 Drives. Because of the way these drives are built, they likely will not support Power PC Macintoshes. For a System 7-compatible driver for your DataFrame drive, we recommend Manager7 formatting software. It is available free at SuperMac's and Casa Blanca Works' forums on America OnLine, in MacSys on CompuServe, in the SuperMac forum on AppleLink, or from Casa Blanca Works' office. A $10 shiping and handling charge will apply.
RUNNING THE DRIVE7 APPLICATION (Adding Your Own Enabler)
Previous versions of Drive7 shipped with a System file on the floppy disk for updating/formatting an internal drive. Unfortunately due to the size Apple's System file, the size of the new Drive7 and the addition of multiple System Enablers it is no longer possible for us to provide a bootable Drive7 floppy disk. We attempt to provide a disk with a System and Drive7. You simply add the enabler for your particular Macintosh to the disk. If there is not enough room for your enabler, you can copy the folder "CBWorks Stack" you your hard drive, and then remove that folder from your floppy disk to make room for your enabler.
You may run the Drive7 program from any internal, external, hard or removable drive. External drives may be formatted or updated by copying the Drive7 application and running it from your startup drive.
Note: I fyou have trouble formatting, please disable system extensions by holding down the Shift key during restart.
Internal drives may be formatted or updated by copying the Drive7 application and running it from an external drive that contains a System folder. Use the “Startup Disk” control panel to select the external drive to start up from. Be sure to hold down the Shift key to disable all system extensions.
BUILDING A STARTUP FLOPPY DISK (FOR USERS WITH A SINGLE HARD DRIVE)
Because of the size of the Drive7 program, you can not build a 800K System 6 boot disk. To build a System 7 startup disk with the Drive7 application on it you will need:
• Apple’s System software (on floppy disk or CD-ROM disc).
• A blank high density floppy disk.
• The Drive7 floppy disk.
• A Macintosh computer in working order.
Note: We recommend you use the System software installer program to build a startup disk rather than simply dragging files from an existing system folder.
Here are the steps to build a startup floppy disk:
1) Start up the Macintosh as you normally would from your hard drive.
2) At the Macintosh desktop, insert the Drive7 floppy disk.
3) Select the Drive7 application and drag a copy of it to your hard disk.
4) Insert and erase (or initialize) your blank floppy disk using the “Erase disk” command from the “Special” menu. Name the floppy "Boot Disk".
5) After the Boot Disk floppy disk is initialized, restart the Macintosh from Apple’s system floppy disk called “Install Me First”. If you do not have an “Install Me First” disk use the disk called “Install 1”. From a CD-ROM drive, insert the System software CD and start up from it.
6) At the Installer window select the “Custom” button.
7) Scroll down the list until you see the “Minimum System Software” for your particular Macintosh and select it.
8) Click on the “Switch Disk” button until it displays the name of the floppy disk you are started up from, then press eject. (CD-ROM users can skip this step).
9) Insert your newly erased floppy called "Boot Disk". When it’s name appears, click on the “Install” button.
10) The program should begin installing the minimum Macintosh system software you selected onto the "Boot Disk" floppy, and will prompt you for each installer disk needed.
11) When the System installation is complete, quit the Installer program and Restart the Macintosh normally.
12) At the Macintosh desktop, insert your "Boot Disk" floppy and open the System Folder. Check to be sure that the Finder, the System suitcase and any required System Enabler are installed inside the System Folder.
13) If all System files are intact close the System Folder and locate the Drive7 application on your hard disk.
14) Select the Drive7 application and drag it to the new "Boot Disk" floppy. If there is not enough room on the floppy disk for the Drive7 application, your can throw away the Finder from the floppy disk, and re-name the Drive7 aplication to "Finder".
15) You can now restart your Macintosh with the "Boot Disk" floppy and launch Drive7 to update or format your internal drive. You may want to lock the floppy disk as a precaution.

System Enablers are required to start up all new Macintoshes and PowerMacs. If you have a newer Macintosh that requires a System Enabler, you must be sure it is in the System folder of the drive or floppy disk you wish to start up from. The following is a current list of System Enablers. Please ask your dealer for current information information.
